Old Time Radio Thursdays – #022: Jack Benny Goes Christmas Shopping

The short intro: For those who are unfamiliar with the concept, Old Time Radio is the phrase generally used to refer to the time when radio was (mostly) live, and was full of a variety of different shows, as opposed to simply being a means for record labels to use robots to promote the top records of the day. Old Time Radio Thursdays is my chance to explore some of those old radio shows, their connections (both old and new) to movies, and hopefully to encourage some of the rest of you to take a look at a probably unfamiliar source of entertainment that I truly love. If you want more info on OTR, and some examples of the variety of shows that were made, be sure to check out this introductory post.

Because of the lengthy run of The Jack Benny Program, there is no shortage of Christmas-themed episodes, and there are certainly enough of them to turn this feature over to the great comedian and look at how he celebrated the holiday over the years. So just sit back and lets turn back the clock and see what kind of things Jack got up to…

And just for good measure, here is one of my favorite Christmas-themed episodes of Jack’s TV show. In my personal opinion, it may very well be one of the funniest episodes of any television show ever.

(Oh, and if the voice of the store clerk sounds familiar, well, there may be a good reason for that, Doc.)

Next week: Of course, Jack wasn’t the only one to celebrate Christmas over the years, so we’ll take a look at what some of his contemporaries were up to.

Until next time, Happy Listening!
