Saturday Double Feature: 300: Rise Of An Empire (2014) and…

Saturday on the blog means Saturday Double Feature, right? Remember, the basic idea here is to take a movie that is out in theaters now, and pair it up with another movie from the 1980s or before. Sometimes the connection will be obvious, and sometimes it’ll be a little less so, but that’s part of the fun.

By the way, if you’re a fan of these double features, be sure to check out this post, which has the details of the new Saturday Double Feature Guessing Game. Be a winner! Show off your movie knowledge! Maybe even win an Actual Prize!

Okay, yeah, 300: Rise of an Empire. It’s the sequel(ish) to 2006’s 300, and, like the first film, features lots of mostly-naked, mostly CGI-buffed bodies swinging swords at each other. The real difference between this one and its predecessor? This one takes place largely on the high seas.

Oh, there is one other difference between this one and the 2006 movie. It features a strong female as one of  the leads. Eva Green plays Artemesia, and if you actually watched the trailer above, you may have noticed that there is one scene in it where she says “You are not a god, you’re just a man.” This line actually comes just after a love-making session, and features a topless Artemesia pulling a sword on her erstwhile partner.

It was that scene that provided the spark for today’s double feature, because as soon as I saw it, I was immediately thrown back to the early 1980’s, and the definitely not CGI’d “body” of work featuring the late Lana Clarkson as a sword-wielding warrior who, yes, quite often was swinging that sword while in various states of undress, and, in particular, this one – 1985’s Barbarian Queen

Of course, I could just as easily have gone with Barbarian Queen 2 (this particular trailer, btw, is nsfw):

or Deathstalker (which, though this trailer doesn’t really show it, features Clarkson in a particularly interesting “costume”, and also contains added Barbi Benton goodness):

or… well, you get the idea.

Anyway, what do you think? Are you looking forward to or have you already seen 300: Rise of an Empire? Do you have any other ideas for pairing films with it? if so, let me know below. And also let me know of any other upcoming movies you’d like to see “double featured”. Consider it, if you will, your chance to challenge me to come up with an interesting pair.

Until next time, Happy Viewing!
